Week Three Perspective: Timing is Everything - Even in Cancer

Timing is everything.

Mike Doody cut a fine figure on the dance floor. A snappy dresser, Mike imbued onlookers with a desire to get on the dance floor and copy his disco moves to Gloria Gaynor's "I will Survive".

When it comes to Mike, timing doesn't just refer to the dance floor. It reflects his innate knowing of what a person might need.

Recently. out of the blue, I received a gift from Mike. Through Canada Post, a small but mighty package was delivered to our home. A Maya Angelou book: "Wouldn't take Nothing for my Journey Now".

I was stunned by this kind gesture. Not just because it was a gift but because of what it said. You see, the book arrived as I was struggling to understand the gatekeeping and the waiting games in the health care system. I found myself growing agitated by the constant "hurry-up and wait". Waiting. For results. For doctors. For treatment. For tests. For call backs. Navigating gatekeepers only to be kept waiting.

When I randomly opened the book, the following passage was waiting for me.

"Living life as art requires a readiness to forgive. I do not mean that you should suffer fools gladly but remember your own shortcomings, and when you encounter another with flaws, don't be eager to righteously seal yourself away from the offender forever. Take a few breaths and imagine yourself having just committed the action which has set you at odds".

Wow. Deep breath.

You see, when I reflect on the times when I have not returned calls or chose not to decide or left things in limbo, I am embarrassed. As a coach, when we see "judging" going on, the question is often "Where are you that way?". The question is intended to help a person with self awareness or discovery.

So, before I start chirping at the health care providers, I need to do some serious self reflection. That does not mean I intend to suffer fools gladly. But, I shall do so dancing to Gloria Gaynor's hit "I will Survive".

Thank you, Mike Doody. I love you.
